Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year in Spanish

Some say it’s the most wonderful time of the year, a time of warm and fuzzy feelings and heart-felt gifts being exchanged, a time of family get-togethers and long-held traditions.

It’s Christmas!

As a Spaniard living in Wales, I can sometimes miss Spanish Christmas traditions like the Christmas lottery, tapas on Christmas Eve, the 12 grapes on New Years’ Eve and the three wise men visiting on the 6th January!

For me, therefore, there is nothing more heart-warming than someone greeting me with Feliz Navidad when I bump into them to bring a bit of Spain to Wales.

As Nelson Mandela said: If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.

Why not show a little extra care this Christmas by greeting your Spanish friends, family and acquaintances with a Spanish ‘Happy Christmas’.

Here’s how you say it:

Feliz Navidad

(feliz nabida)

And for New Year’s Eve:

Feliz Año Nuevo

(feliz aɲo nuevo)

My English wife and I are looking forward to a multi-cultural Christmas this year as I enjoy a traditional roast dinner in the UK, and she enjoys some seafood tapas in Spain.

Whether you’re English or Spanish – Merry Christmas & Feliz Navidad!
